Both imaged through FOG, with the same disk imaged and allowed to arm themselves and joined to a domain. If you have 2 identical machines, in this instance it happens to be 2 HP Elitedesk SFF systems. The error from the gui menu is much more wordy, but basically says it failed. And since i started this thread, just to make sure I wasn't dreaming it, I spun up a VM with the same iso i used to build this image in question and installed and activated with same key in question without issue, so it isn't the key.Īlso, to make sure I wasn't daydreaming again, I used PSExec to the machine in question and ran the cscript C:\Windows\System32\slmgr.vbs /ATO to see if it was in internet connection fluke or something else, but receive the same response. We recently had to add more to this number due to our annual re-imaging and I thought that might have been the culprit but as I mentioned earlier in this thread I can activate a new machine no problem.

If the OEM license is tied to the system board or motherboard wouldn't replacing the motherboard and/or processor be just about the same as dropping it in another identical system? The machine doesn't care about RAM or case, or video card if there is one. It sounds to me like the MAK key count might be reached, which is causing any new MAK activation to fail. While it may technically work, you're not licensed to do so.

License-wise, you cannot transfer or reassigning the VL Upgrade license is assigned to a device.

Even having the OEM key in the BIOS and activated with a VL, reactivating shouldn't be a problem regardless of replacing hardware or not, right? That is the question that I am trying to resolve. I guess we need a double check from Chris (Microsoft) on this.Ĭan you take drive with a full, working, VL install out of a PC and put it in another PC without breaking your licensing?Īs for the technical 'will it work' aspect, yes, it most certainly should. I am just trying to understand this issue and find out if anyone else has experienced this issue.

But, it's not legit, license-wise.ĭon't get me wrong, I am not trying to be argumentative or attempting to do anything illegal or improper. This is just the first time I have ever seen anything like this. A new MB (even the same model) should trigger a 'new hardware' alert.

Moving a hard drive between identical towers or laptops is something that I have personally done hundreds of times without issue without having to re-sysprep or reactivate on both windows 7 machines and windows 10 prior to 1703. I was talking about keeping the license valid, not about your activation issues. It isn't legal, but it will work, just like in a virtual machine. With Windows 10 there is - the OEM key is in the BIOS.īecause theoretically, you can build a machine and install windows on it using a VL and not have an OEM or CAL license and it will work fine. Yes, that is true, but that isn't a physical license or file is it? The machine requires the OEM license or CAL, but there isn't physically anything that matches or mates those 2 together. This is just the first time I have ever seen anything like this.

Also, most times if you are replacing a piece of hardware with a duplicate piece, this error isn't triggered, only if you replace with something different.

And I understand that, but running the activation again with a valid Key such as a volume license key should restart or reactivate the device. Once a machine does the activation, I am sure there is some kind of hardware combo sid sent to MS showing that this device has been activated with this code, and if that sid changes it is no longer valid. Because theoretically, you can build a machine and install windows on it using a VL and not have an OEM or CAL license and it will work fine.
